Screen Time and ADHD: What Parents Need to Know

12/26/20251 min read

Kids today spend a lot of time on phones, tablets, TVs, and games. Many parents worry: Does too much screen time cause ADHD?

ADHD is a brain condition that children are born with, screens do not cause ADHD.
But research shows that too much screen time can make attention and behaviour problems worse, especially for kids who already struggle.

What Studies Say (in simple words)

  • Children who use screens for many hours a day are more likely to show inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour.

  • Fast-moving videos and games can make it harder for children to focus on slower activities like schoolwork.

  • Screen time late at night can disturb sleep and poor sleep can increase ADHD symptoms.

  • Children with ADHD may find it harder to stop using screens once they start.

So: screens don’t cause ADHD, but too much can make symptoms stronger.

What Parents Can Do

Here are some simple, helpful ideas:

  1. Set Limits: Try to keep recreational screen time (games, cartoons, social media) to 1–2 hours a day. No screens during meals or homework time.

  2. Protect Sleep: Switch off screens at least one hour before bedtime. Keep devices out of the bedroom at night.

  3. Encourage Other Fun: Make time for outdoor play, sports, drawing, puzzles, or reading. These activities help the brain grow.

  4. Choose Better Content: Pick educational and slow-paced videos instead of very fast, loud or violent ones. Watch together when possible and talk about what they see.

When to Ask for Help

If your child:

  • Struggles a lot with focus

  • Has trouble sitting still

  • Finds it hard to control emotions

  • Is falling behind in school

ADHD is manageable with support. Early help makes a big difference.
